What is the Data Spaces Fundamentals certification?
It is an introductory professional qualification that provides a basic understanding of data spaces and their key aspects, within the ‘Fundamentals’ level of the IDSA certification programme. It is an essential step for any professional wishing to become part of this growing ecosystem.
Course content
Throughout the course, the main fundamentals of data spaces will be covered: introduction and use cases; enterprise, functional and technical architecture; governance; data trust and sovereignty; interoperability within the IDS framework; business models and value creation; and methodologies for onboarding organisations with a low level of digitalisation.
By the end of the course, you will be able to describe the benefits, challenges and key components of data spaces, analyse opportunities for interoperability and collaboration, and apply this knowledge to real-world projects, particularly within the IDS framework.

The Industrial Digital Twin Association (IDTA) has just published a new technical guide to help companies implement the future Digital Product Passports (DPP), a kind of “digital identity card” that every product must carry in compliance with European regulations. This guide explains how to create these passports using the Asset Administration Shell (AAS), a standard that functions as a “digital record” in which companies can organise all their product information in a structured manner. It is the first document in a series aimed at ensuring that these passports can be created easily, consistently across different companies, and in accordance with the law.
Digital Product Passports will become a key element of the future Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). Their purpose is to provide a digital record of a product throughout its entire lifecycle, including information on its composition, environmental sustainability, carbon footprint, repairability, reuse and recyclability. By making this information accessible to manufacturers, distributors, consumers and public authorities, DPPs will promote greater transparency and support the transition towards a more circular economy.
With this new publication, IDTA takes another important step towards turning these regulatory requirements into practical implementations. The Submodel Template defines a standardized structure for the mandatory metadata that every DPP should contain and demonstrates how the Asset Administration Shell can serve as the modular foundation for building compliant Digital Product Passports. Instead of developing different solutions for each industry or product, the approach relies on reusable and standardized building blocks.
This modular architecture offers significant advantages for organizations. It enables the reuse of existing information models, simplifies access and permission management, allows new data to be added without modifying existing structures, and ensures interoperability across companies and digital platforms. As a result, Digital Product Passports can be deployed more efficiently, consistently and at scale.
A clear example of this approach is the Battery Passport, which already combines several standardized IDTA Submodels to create a complete and regulation-compliant digital passport for batteries. The new template extends this concept to a much broader range of products that will require Digital Product Passports in the coming years, laying the groundwork for harmonized implementation across Europe.
The publication of IDTA 02099-1 further strengthens the role of the Asset Administration Shell as one of the key technological enablers for digital twins and Digital Product Passports. It represents another milestone towards the adoption of common industrial standards and the development of a more interoperable, transparent and data-driven industrial ecosystem.

Jesús Pulgarín, Healthcare Senior Manager at NTT DATA, a BAIDATA member, recently discussed in an interview the challenges surrounding the implementation of the European Health Data Space (EHDS). According to Pulgarín, Europe must move beyond technical interoperability and build a model based on robust data governance and a shared understanding of data.
Pulgarín explains that one of the main obstacles is the high level of fragmentation and heterogeneity of healthcare data across Europe. To ensure that data can be reused and generate value at the European level, the focus must shift from purely technical interoperability towards semantic and organisational interoperability, enabling seamless data exchange between organisations and the development of harmonised data models.
In this context, the EHDS represents a paradigm shift. Beyond simply connecting healthcare systems, it highlights the need for common strategies on data governance and data quality. This approach will unlock the full potential of secure health data sharing, supporting more efficient, coordinated, and patient-centred healthcare across Europe.
The Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC) has officially entered a new three-year phase, known as DSSC2, with the aim of accelerating the deployment of European data spaces and helping them deliver greater value for businesses and public administrations. After laying the conceptual and technical foundations during its first phase, the initiative is now shifting its focus towards large-scale implementation, adoption, and the creation of sustainable business value.
Among the key developments of this new phase are a revamped support model for data space initiatives, including dedicated sector experts, value coaches, and acceleration programmes. DSSC2 also introduces a new maturity assessment framework that will help identify the specific needs of each data space and provide tailored guidance according to its level of development.
In addition, DSSC2 will strengthen the connection between data spaces and other strategic pillars of the European digital ecosystem, including artificial intelligence, cloud and edge infrastructures, standardisation initiatives, and open-source technologies. Through this renewed approach, the project aims to consolidate data spaces as a key infrastructure for advancing the European data economy and enhancing Europe’s digital competitiveness.

The European Commission has unveiled its new Tech Sovereignty Package, a set of initiatives designed to strengthen Europe’s digital autonomy in strategic areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and data centres. The initiative aims to reduce Europe’s dependence on third-country technologies while reinforcing its capacity to develop competitive and resilient digital infrastructures.
Among the package’s flagship measures are the Chips Act 2.0, which will boost Europe’s capabilities in advanced semiconductor production, and a new Cloud and Artificial Intelligence Development Act, aimed at tripling Europe’s data centre capacity over the next five to seven years. The proposal will facilitate the deployment of sustainable, high-capacity cloud infrastructures capable of meeting the rapidly growing computing demand driven by AI.
The package also introduces a European Open Source Strategy to strengthen technological autonomy by promoting open-source solutions in areas such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and semiconductors. In parallel, the Commission has presented a roadmap to accelerate the digitalisation of Europe’s energy system through AI and secure data sharing, improving grid management, optimising energy consumption and enabling the integration of new digital infrastructures.
The initiative represents a major step forward for the EU’s AI Continent Action Plan. As AI applications require ever-growing volumes of high-quality data, securely shared under common governance rules, data spaces become an essential enabling infrastructure. By fostering trusted collaboration between businesses and public administrations, data spaces will play a key role in supporting Europe’s digital sovereignty and strengthening its competitiveness in the global data economy.
Spain is strengthening a common strategy to foster the adoption of artificial intelligence across its healthcare system. In a recent interview, Álvaro Alonso Zorita, Head of Data Analytics and Business Intelligence Project Coordination at the Directorate-General for Digital Health and Information Systems of the Spanish National Health System, highlighted Spain’s collaborative model as a benchmark for the development of the future European Health Data Space (EHDS).
According to Alonso Zorita, Spain has established a National Digital Health Strategy alongside dedicated initiatives such as the Primary Care Digital Transformation Plan and the IASNS programme, which promotes shared AI priorities across the country’s autonomous communities. Supported in part by FEDER funding until 2029, these initiatives aim to unlock the value of health data to deliver more coordinated, secure, and efficient healthcare.
Spain’s experience demonstrates that the success of AI in healthcare depends not only on technological innovation, but also on the ability to share high-quality data, establish robust governance frameworks, and foster collaboration between public administrations, healthcare professionals, and institutions.
Ubikare and the technology centre IKERLAN, both BAIDATA members, are collaborating on the development of ESSAD (Interoperable and Secure Health and Social Care Data Space), an initiative designed to enable the secure exchange of information between the different stakeholders involved in home care services. The project aims to improve coordination between healthcare professionals, social services, and public administrations, fostering more efficient and person-centred care.
ESSAD is an excellent example of the value that data spaces can deliver. It will allow patient information to follow individuals throughout their care journey, reducing administrative burdens and enabling professionals to make better-informed decisions based on reliable and up-to-date data. The solution is built on the principles of data sovereignty and interoperability, aligning with the future European Health Data Space (EHDS).
Funded by the Spanish Secretariat of State for Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence (SEDIA) under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, the project aims to become a benchmark for health and social care data spaces, promoting collaborative models that accelerate the digital transformation of the care sector.
The International Data Spaces Association (IDSA) has published the main conclusions of the Global Data Spaces Roundtable, held in Bilbao during the Data Economy Week. The event brought together more than 25 experts from 11 countries to discuss three key topics: the impact of data spaces on artificial intelligence, the future of the global data economy, and the importance of creating business value and new opportunities through data.
One of the key takeaways from the discussion was that the rapid growth of AI makes access to high-quality, well-governed data shared under clear rules more essential than ever. In this context, data spaces are no longer seen merely as a technological infrastructure, but as a governance framework that ensures trust, sovereignty, and control over data usage.
Participants also agreed that the future of the data economy will depend on the ability of data spaces to deliver tangible business value. Beyond enabling secure data sharing, they must help organisations unlock new collaboration opportunities, strengthen their competitiveness, and turn data into a strategic asset that generates real benefits for businesses and society as a whole.
During the 5th BAIDATA Forum, the 2026 BAIDATA Awards were presented; these awards are designed to recognise organisations and projects that are leading the development of the data economy and data spaces at national and international level. This year, the awards were divided into three different categories:
In the category of Leadership in the Creation of Data Ecosystems, the Catena-X Spain Competence Centre, promoted by the Innovalia Association and the Automotive Intelligence Centre (AIC), and the Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC) were recognised for their role in the coordination and deployment of European data spaces.
In the Development of Technological Solutions and Data Spaces Infrastructures category, the awards went to Anjana Data, for its data governance platform for shared spaces, and to T-Systems, for its contribution to the development of key technologies and standards for the international ecosystem.
Finally, in the category of ‘Adoption and Implementation of Innovative Technologies and Use Cases’, the awards went to BDEO, for its CAreD project applied to the insurance sector, and SEGITTUR, for its leadership in the development of the tourism data space.
The BAIDATA Awards 2026 have highlighted initiatives that are already demonstrating the real impact of data spaces in strategic sectors, underlining our commitment to data-driven innovation in the Iberian Peninsula.
