El III Foro BAIDATA ha sido todo un éxito que nos ha consolidado como el referente en el desarrollo de la economía del dato

May 10, 2024

DESCRIPCIÓN

  • The meeting was attended by nearly 400 people from more than 180 organisations interested in learning about the activities of BAIDATA and its members in the development of data spaces.
  • The holding of the 3rd BAIDATA Forum on 8 May at the Bizkaia Aretoa in Bilbao has consolidated the BAIDATA association as the reference initiative on the data economy in the Iberian Peninsula.
  • The 3rd BAIDATA Forum was attended by representatives of the main European organisations that coordinate the strategies for the development of data spaces IDSA and CATENA-X; as well as representatives of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and a large group of pioneering companies in the data economy.

Once again this year, Bilbao has once again become the European data capital for a day with the celebration of the 3rd BAIDATA Forum, which brought together representatives of the main European data space organisations such as IDSA and CATENA-X together with a wide representation of the regional ecosystem including BAIDATA members and other companies interested in the data economy.Around 400 people interested in both deepening their knowledge of the data economy and learning first-hand about the work and first results of the BAIDATA ecosystem in the development of data spaces participated in the event.

BAIDATA with an eye on the internationalisation of data spaces

Ager Izagirre, the Provincial Councillor of the Department of Public Administration and Institutional Relations, opened the event, highlighting the importance of the participation of public entities in the promotion and development of the data economy.

For his part, José Echezarra, president of the association, reiterated BAIDATA's plans to focus on Europe, highlighting its importance as a key objective to establish a common European data space. This vision, as he mentioned last year, focuses on ensuring data sovereignty, fostering trust in secure data sharing and establishing regulation to serve as a reference model. BAIDATA will continue to expand from the local level to integrate into the new global industrial data chains.

In addition, the three areas of action in the data spaces were again highlighted: Society, Territory, Industry and Talent. These areas provide a framework for the development of business models and opportunities that transcend traditional vertical sectors, such as health, security, education, mobility, energy, public administrations, smart cities, tourism, industry 4.0, construction and creative and cultural industries. The association also reaffirmed its commitment to enhance its service offering in key areas such as innovation, talent management and ecosystems. BAIDATA will continue to lead the development of innovative spaces in the data economy.

Trust, global standards and reference models for data sharing

The forum started with the panel discussion "The future is already here: data as a driver of change" moderated by Lars Nagel, CEO of IDSA and with the participation of some IDSA board members: Boris Otto, from Fraunhofer ISST and coordinator of the Data Spaces Support Center, Ute Burkhard, from Volkswagen and Berry Vertjens, from TNO. During this discussion, the importance of connectors to solve the challenge of sovereignty and interoperability of data spaces was highlighted; on the other hand, the importance of supply chain optimisation to enhance the competitiveness of companies and the role of data spaces in all this was underlined. Finally, it was emphasised that the key now is to build trust to maximise the adoption of data spaces, that they are shared between all participants in a data space, and between data spaces through protocols such as the Data Space Protocol.

"BAIDATA Excellence Awards" Ceremony

During this event, a BAIDATA excellence awards ceremony was held to the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and Catena X, for their contribution to the development of data ecosystems, to NTT DATA and SQS, for the development of data space technology and infrastructure, and to Eustat and Mondragon Unibertsitatea for their innovative commitment to developing data-driven use cases.

Technologies, tools and solutions for business

After the awards ceremony and the appropriate coffee break, the round of presentations began, focusing on technologies, tools and solutions for companies in the field of data spaces. The session was led by Reinhold Achtz, president of the International Data Space Association (IDSA), who presented the main assets offered by IDSA for the deployment of data spaces that allow the exploitation of data in a secure and sovereign way. He highlighted as an example that the value of data is created in the "Digital Product Passport" and that, in the future, all physical products will have their digital twin.

In the following presentations Oscar Lázaro (Innovalia) talked about what European data ecosystems are and how they drive economic development and innovation. Jesús Alonso (BAIDATA) presented the new IDSA professional certification programme, focused on certifying technical knowledge in data spaces to make it easier for companies to hire qualified professionals, which is being developed by BAIDATA in collaboration with IDSA. It is worth noting that BAIDATA will play a key role in Europe in this programme, as it will be responsible for operating the programme in Europe. On the other hand, Javier Valiño (Eclipse Foundation) highlighted that the future of data spaces is standardised and open source; finally, and to end the last presentation of the morning session, Javier Bores (SQS) offered a solution to simplify the implementation of data spaces: data spaces in the cloud (Data Space as a service).

Inspiring the future: success stories in the data economy

Oliver Ganser, President of Catena-X and Vice President of the BMW Group, was in charge of opening the afternoon session, which focused on presenting initiatives and success stories in the data economy. In his presentation, he highlighted the two key factors for generating value for the ecosystem: scalability and speed - getting many players involved in a short time. This was followed by various presentations of success stories implemented by members of the BAIDATA ecosystem in the three areas of opportunity: projects such as the BIOK challenges or the use case between EUSTAT and Mondragon Unvierstitatea for society, experiences in Smart Cities by Tecnalia and Inkolan or the EITB data strategy in the area of Territory, and finally use cases in industry promoted by Ayesa, the Mondragon Group, Innovalia Metrology and Inetum.

The magic of data in football: strategy and actions of ATHLETIC CLUB

To conclude the third edition of the BAIDATA forum, we had the participation of part of Athletic Club's management team: Ignacio Urigüen, Head of Technology of the Board and German Garitaonaindia, Chief Data Officer of the club. During their intervention they talked about their agreement with the American company S2Global, to become the first football club in the world to use artificial intelligence to analyse sporting performance.
