'AI Continent' action plan will put Europe at the forefront of AI development

April 11, 2025

DESCRIPCIÓN

During the ‘AI Action Summit’ held in Paris, the European Commission has announced the launch of an innovative action plan to achieve global leadership in Artificial Intelligence. Under the title ‘AI Continent’, this ambitious initiative seeks to transform traditional European industries and their assets into powerful engines of innovation and AI acceleration.

Here are the five main pillars on which this strategic plan is based:

  • Build an AI computing and data infrastructure: The European Commission plans to build AI ‘gigafactories’ equipped with up to 100,000 next-generation chips. These megastructures will serve critical industrial and scientific sectors and will have sufficient computing capacity to train and develop AI models at an unprecedented level, as we explained in our previous article on the InvestAI initiative.
  • Increasing access to large volumes of high quality data: The creation of data labs is critical to the success of this plan. The development of the Data Act and the creation of European data spaces will contribute significantly to obtaining large amounts of data from world-class sources.
  • Encourage the adoption of AI in strategic sectors: Currently only 13.5% of European companies have incorporated this new technology into their production processes. With the support of the European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIH) network, the Commission hopes to significantly increase this percentage in the coming months.
  • Boosting talent: In addition to facilitating the international recruitment of highly qualified AI experts and researchers, the European Commission will promote scholarship programs focused on this new technology and develop educational initiatives to train young people. A new AI Skills Academy will lead this investment in talent.
  • Simplify regulation: 2025 is the year in which important EU regulations such as the Data Act and the AI Act will start to be widely implemented. While the latter will not be fully enforceable until 2026, several key provisions will need to be adopted this year. The AI Act Service Desk will help companies comply with current regulations.

If you want to know the next steps of this interesting process, at BAIDATA we will keep you up to date with everything happening around the data economy and AI in the European Union. Keep an eye on our social networks so you don't miss anything!

In addition, you can also participate in the public consultations that the European Commission has recently opened to contribute to the shaping of the initiatives of this action plan.
