IDSA kicks off 2026 with renewed momentum for standardization

DESCRIPCIÓN
Through a new article, IDSA has highlighted the decisive progress of the ISO/IEC 20151 standard, which clearly defines what a data space is and how it should operate. The standard does not impose specific architectures or technology stacks, but instead sets out the common principles that ensure trust, interoperability, and shared governance among data-sharing parties. In 2025, the text went through a broad international review process involving experts from different regions and regulatory frameworks, strengthening its global relevance. The result is a common language that allows very diverse initiatives to align around a shared understanding of data spaces.
At the same time, IDSA has been working to connect this global standard with regional regulatory developments, especially in Europe, where the Data Act introduces more concrete compliance and implementation requirements. The challenge is to avoid parallel or conflicting definitions that could fragment the ecosystem. To address this, the organization has mapped the broader standardization landscape to ensure that regional standards are built on a common foundation. With ISO/IEC 20151 expected to be finalized in early 2026, the sector will gain a stable reference point that will support interoperability, procurement, and the practical deployment of data spaces.
