Our participation as speakers at the sm4rtenance project kick-off

November 21, 2023

DESCRIPCIÓN

In this week's article we would like to talk about our participation in the kick-off of the SM4RTENANCE project (Data Sharing in Manufacturing for Sustainable Growth) that took place last November 6th at the Automotive Intelligence Center (AIC) in Amorebieta. SM4RTENANCE is a project promoted by the European Union that aims to revolutionize the industrial sector through the creation and implementation of a common data ecosystem.

From BAIDATA, as one of the 47 partners that are part of this project, we were honored to participate and share our experience with other international experts and institutional representatives, as well as with those attending the event. Below, we will explain the most interesting points of each panel and presentation, in order to know the impact of SM4RTENANCE in the future of the sector.

The session started with the intervention of Yves Paindeveine, senior expert at DG-CNECT (European Commission), who explained how data spaces can be extremely useful for manufacturing companies and how the Commission is promoting their deployment, adding that "the deployment of a data space infrastructure will help companies to make informed decisions". Next, Zeljko Pazin, CEO of EFFRA explained how data spaces can drive the "Made In Europe" association, which is the voice of sustainable and competitive manufacturing in Europe.

Then followed by the intervention of Maximilian Wagner, VDMA Project Manager, who explained how Manufacturing-X, a German initiative to digitize supply chains in industry, shares the same mission as SM4RTENANCE and can help its deployment. In this regard we would like to mention the following quote "Manufacturing-X only expands if especially SMEs join in, avoiding monopolistic structures and maintaining sovereignty".

Following the interesting round of presentations, it was the turn of Clara Pezuela, Vice President of FIWARE, who is involved in the development of the DSSC (Data Spaces Support Center). Based on the principles of transparency and openness on which the DSSC is based, Clara spoke about the "delivery plan", as a plan of "numerous assets related to data spaces that we share with the network of stakeholders and the general public". In addition to her, we had the participation of Borja Arenaza, Business Developer at AIC, who spoke about the important role of the use of data in the transformation of the automotive industry. Maria Rosseti, Project manager at MADE, explained the role of the EDIH network in relation to data spaces in the manufacturing industry: "They encourage SMEs in the use, exchange and reuse of data to increase competitiveness, sustainability and circularity".

After providing the necessary context to understand the importance of common data spaces, Oscar Lazaro, Secretary of BAIDATA and CEO of Innovalia Association, which is the company in charge of coordinating the project, explained the basis of SM4RTENANCE, and how it will change the future of the industrial sector, in this sense, he mentioned that "80% of industrial data is never used", also that trust is key in the speed at which data moves, and that the best way to generate trust is to develop an initiative such as SM4RTENANCE, which brings together a wide range of partners. In addition, he also explained the concept of "Data Rooms", a mechanism that will be developed within SM4RTENANACE: "The goal of this project is simply to pool data. Data Rooms keep the complexity and diversity of Asset 4.0 data exchange scenarios under control".

Afterwards, we had the opportunity to participate in a round table discussion entitled "perspectives from the industrial sector" moderated by Carmen Polcaro (Innovalia Association) and formed by Tsukassa Levy (Schneider), Zeljko Pazin (EFFRA), Jesús Alonso (BAIDATA), Sebastian Opriel (Sovity) and Mike de Roode (TNO). During the event, Jesús Alonso, director of BAIDATA's technical secretariat, emphasized that "at BAIDATA we want SMEs to try out the technology so that they can see what data spaces can do for their businesses".

Finally, Alberto Fernández, Director of Innovation and Technology of the Basque Government, stressed the importance of projects such as SM4RTENANCE, as they are key to developing our industry and making it increasingly competitive.

In short, SM4RTENANCE is an important initiative to create and deploy a common European data space in the industrial sector, and therefore, we are proud to be part of the launch of this important project and we are eager to start working on its development.
