Spain is making progress on AI regulation with new safeguards for the use of biometric data
The Government has published the text of the Draft Bill on the Proper Use and Governance of Artificial Intelligence, which will bring the Spanish framework into line with the European AI Regulation (AI Act).
This legislation strengthens the role of the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) in supervising systems that process biometric data, a particularly relevant aspect in a context where the exchange and use of data is becoming increasingly important for the development of AI solutions and sector-specific data spaces.
Among the key new features of this legislation is the emphasis on supervising high-risk AI systems, particularly those using facial, voice or fingerprint recognition. Growing concerns regarding access to this sensitive data highlight the need for robust frameworks ensuring trust, sovereignty and control over information.
