The International Data Spaces Association (IDSA) has published a new document titled “Observability in Data Spaces,” which addresses a key aspect for trust and governance in data spaces: observability.

Aware of the relevance of this topic for our ecosystem, at BAIDATA we have translated the document into Spanish, with the aim of bringing its content closer to our partners and facilitating its understanding and practical application in the data space initiatives we develop.

The document examines the importance of observability as an essential component in the operation and governance of data spaces as defined by IDSA. Data spaces are meant to be a trusted system in which participants can share and exchange data under a controlled governance scheme, and even though data sharing always happens between the parties, under certain circumstances those transactions need to be observed for different reasons. Its main objective is to provide the necessary foundations for organizations to assess their level of transparency, traceability, and control in data exchange.

Among its most notable contributions, the text presents methodological tools that enable entities to:

• Determine whether observability is a requirement, whether agreed upon solely between the parties involved or imposed by current regulations or by the data space’s governance scheme.
• Choose between a centralized or decentralized solution to implement observability of the transaction, depending on the requirements set out in the general governance framework, managed by the Data Space Governance Authority or by the individual contract between participants.
• Identify the third parties that need access to the collected information, such as external auditors, government authorities, or other parties that must intervene in the event of incidents.
• Define at what point that information must be provided or evaluated: before, during, or after the transaction.

In this way, the document becomes a reference guide for designing and implementing mechanisms that ensure data transactions are trustworthy, traceable, and compliant with current regulations.

In “Observability in Data Spaces,” BAIDATA’s partners will find a detailed description of the technical and regulatory requirements derived from the IDSA framework (particularly the IDSA Rulebook) for implementing observability, in both centralized and decentralized architectures.

The document also analyzes practical use cases in which observability plays a crucial role, such as:

• The exchange of regulated or high-value datasets, where it is necessary to demonstrate that data usage complies with what was agreed.
• Data marketplaces and billing and charging processes, which require observing the transaction to ensure it is properly settled.
• Incident investigation, in which third parties such as auditors or authorities need access to transaction information in order to evaluate it.

It also examines the relationship between observability and other key concepts such as data provenance and traceability, and highlights the need to establish governance processes and standards that strengthen trust among the ecosystem’s different participants. The document further notes that, while observability strengthens trust and regulatory compliance, it also brings certain technical complexity in tracking data usage, privacy implications for monitoring, and possible legal constraints across jurisdictions, as well as an implementation cost that can affect data processing performance.

This translation forms part of BAIDATA’s commitment to bringing the main international developments in the field of data spaces to our community. Thanks to this, our partners will be able to gain a deeper understanding of a concept that is essential for the evolution of interoperable, secure and reliable data spaces, in line with European standards.
